Matthew 28:16 says Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted.
This is the backdrop, the 11 disciples (less Judas) are waiting for Jesus. There is contrast in that some worshiped while others doubted. Worship is an act of the will and doubt is an act of the will too. They see him and they are excited that he is there – but the last part of verse 17 is what jumped out at me. Matthew records that some doubted. So what did they doubt? Did they doubt there eyes, their experiences, their hearts? Matthew doesn’t say, he just says the doubted.
Doubt is caused by fear. Fear of the unknown; fear that if I trust in something so completely that I will lose something. Jesus says that the one who loses his life for my sake will find it and the one who attempts to preserve their life will lose it. What a paradox. But you see this evidenced in the lives of many. They completely trust in God and their lives are richer for it. I have met people that have nothing but Jesus and they are some of the happiest people I have come in contact with. I have also met people that have many worldly possessions and they are miserable and thankless. Some worshiped others doubted. It wasn’t a different set of conditions; it was a condition of the heart.
