Musing from a contemplative mind....
You THINK
"If you had children you would understand..." Words that are both, pretentious and poisonous. These words are typically followed up by, "so when are you going to have kids?" (like it's their right to know) You are faced with THAT question, it's like a drink of indignation mixed with cynicism you are forced to consume. ...er, ah, um - you search for the words, but they are just too painful to utter. So you go on the defensive and THINK that just because you do have kids doesn't mean you understand either. They continue on with their self awarding language; "parenting is hard work, BUT it is SO rewarding." You THINK, if I don't have children am I misfit of society, do I have nothing to offer, are there rewards that are afforded the non-parent? You look in the mirror; you still appear youthful so some still think you just haven't had them yet. So you are able to buy a little time. But you know that in time, time will show reality for what it is.
Then there are those pious ones who will just assume that you decided you would rather not have them. They have never asked you, they just assume it because... ya know, parenting is hard work. (and apparently you are afraid of the work). You THINK to yourself, you do want to show a daughter how to select someone who can take your place in her life, you do you want to show a son how to become a man a lead his family - You do. It's not because you are selfish or wouldn't make the sacrifices, because you would - if you could.
But no one ever asks, they just THINK.
